Keane's mellow melodies supplant guitar riffs for a piano-based sound that gets them loads of Coldplay comparisons. Although they've formed and re-formed under a variety of names, it was 2004's Hope and Fears that put Keane on the world map. It debuted at number one in the UK and had a solid following in the US, thanks to an opening slot on a leg of U2's Elevation tour. They recorded their follow-up, 2006's Under The Iron Sea while on tour and were able to lend songs to various video games and also generate some buzz by supplying a backing tune to The OC. The relentless touring, along with the film, television, and game soundtracks sent Under the Iron Sea to top of the UK charts and all the way to number four in the US.
